I. Aerospace-Grade Power Relays / Power Switch Driver Units (On-Board Power Distribution Control)
Microchip’s aerospace-grade power distribution devices are not traditional electromagnetic relays; they primarily consist of radiation-hardened solid-state power switches and relay driver controllers. These are used for switching, fault isolation, soft start and telemetry reporting for busbars and payload power supplies, and are compatible with satellite power distribution units (PDUs).
Representative models: the LX7712 programmable current-limiting power switch, the LX7714 four-channel fault-tolerant bus controller, and the AAHS298B eight-channel source-side driver, which can be used to drive on-board power relays or directly as solid-state power distribution switches.
Key Features
1. Radiation resistance: Characterised for Total Ionising Dose (TID) and Single-Event Effects (SEE); capable of withstanding typical radiation environments in Low Earth Orbit (LEO); features single-event lockout protection, with fault latch and resettable mechanisms.
2. Protection mechanisms: Programmable current limiting, overvoltage/undervoltage lockout, overtemperature shutdown and short-circuit protection; supports soft start, suppresses busbar surges and protects downstream isolated DC-DC and PoL regulators.
3. Control and Telemetry: SPI/parallel control interfaces; channel-independent enable; real-time acquisition of output current, voltage and temperature telemetry values; reporting to the on-board computer (OBC); supports redundant backup channel configuration.
4. Environmental and Certification: Complies with MIL-STD-883 and MIL-STD-461 aerospace electromagnetic compatibility standards; wide temperature range of –55 °C to +125 °C; ceramic packaging; low vacuum outgassing; suitable for vacuum aerospace environments.
Typical Application
Located at the front end of the satellite’s 28 V/100 V bus, it functions as a power path switch to enable time-division power-up of payloads and fault branch isolation, whilst providing a controlled input power supply for downstream isolated DC-DC converters. It is commonly used in power distribution for on-board communication payloads, propulsion control and camera payloads.
II. Space-grade PoL (Point-of-Load) Switching Regulators
Representative models: MH8565A, POL-05-20S-T (GaN radiation-hardened PoL), specifically designed to supply power in close proximity to on-board FPGAs, PIC64 HPSC on-board processors, high-speed ADCs and memory. These are secondary-side non-isolated buck switching regulators, positioned directly adjacent to the load to minimise trace voltage drop and noise interference.
Key Features
1. Topology: Synchronous buck topology; the POL-05-20S-T utilises GaN power transistors, offering lower switching losses and higher power density compared to silicon-based solutions, with a configurable switching frequency to facilitate EMI suppression.
2. Radiation Resistance: The radiation-hardened version supports long-term operation in LEO; it features Single-Event Transient (SET) suppression, ensuring the output voltage does not overshoot under radiation disturbances, thereby guaranteeing stable power supply to FPGAs and high-speed processor cores.
3. Electrical Parameters: The input is typically a 5V bus (from the output of an upstream isolated DC-DC converter). It can output an adjustable voltage ranging from 0.8V to 3.3V and supports high current. It features a built-in precision reference, loop compensation and remote voltage sensing (SENSE) to compensate for voltage drops over long cables.
4. Comprehensive protection: cycle-by-cycle current limiting, output short-circuit protection, overtemperature protection, and pre-biased soft-start to prevent damage to precision digital chips on board satellites caused by inrush current; supports a ‘Power Good’ (PG) signal output for processor power-up sequencing management.
5. Packaging and Layout: Compact surface-mount aerospace packaging with low radiated emissions; compatible with the PolarFire series of FPGAs and on-board MCUs, significantly simplifying the power supply layout on the satellite board.
Typical Application
Positioned after the isolated DC-DC converter and before the load chips, it serves as the final power supply stage for on-board digital payloads. An on-board computer board typically utilises multiple independent PoLs to supply power to the core, I/O, PHY and memory respectively.
III. Space-Grade Isolated DC-DC Converters (Primary Power Conversion Core)
Representative series: SA series (SA15-28, SA50-28, radiation-hardened (Rad-Hard)) and LE50 series (radiation-tolerant (Rad-Tolerant)). Designed for a 28V satellite bus input, these devices perform primary isolation and voltage conversion, providing a stable, isolated bus power supply for multiple downstream PoLs and LDOs; they constitute the core isolation unit of the on-board power supply.
Key Features
1. Topology and Specifications: The SA Series employs a forward topology with a fixed switching frequency of 220 kHz and supports external synchronisation to prevent inter-board beat frequency interference; the SA15 delivers 15 W and the SA50 delivers 50 W, supporting single- or triple-output configurations; The LE50 utilises a patented magnetic feedback architecture, eliminating the need for optocoupler isolation, thereby enhancing radiation reliability and making it suitable for NewSpace low-Earth orbit satellites.
2. Isolation Safety: Enhanced primary-to-secondary isolation is provided, isolating the satellite bus ground from the payload digital ground; the isolation withstand voltage complies with aerospace safety standards, suppressing bus surges and ground loop interference.
3. Radiation Resistance and Standards: The SA series is radiation-hardened (Rad-Hard), with full TID and SEE characterisation across all parameters, and complies with MIL-STD-883 and MIL-STD-202; the LE50 is a radiation-tolerant version designed for cost-sensitive commercial LEO constellations. Multiple SA series modules can be connected in parallel; up to four modules can be connected in parallel to achieve an output power of approximately 200W.
4. Complementary EMI Solution: Can be paired with the SF100-28 aerospace-grade EMI filter to meet the MIL-STD-461 requirements for on-board conducted and radiated emissions, thereby simplifying the satellite’s overall EMC debugging; features built-in input under-voltage, output over-voltage, over-current and over-temperature protection, with latching of fault conditions.
5. Output Configuration: The classic three-output version typically comprises a 5V main rail plus positive and negative auxiliary power supplies. The 5V main output directly supplies multiple PoL regulators, whilst the positive and negative rails power the analogue signal chain, operational amplifiers and ADC payloads.
Typical Application
Connected downstream of the power switch, it isolates and converts the satellite’s raw 28V bus to a stable on-board 5V bus. It serves as the central core of the entire on-board power supply chain and is widely used in remote sensing satellites, communications constellations and small probe payloads.
